Cheshire Constabulary Band

The Cheshire Constabulary band is more than 40 years old and while many Police bands have faded over the years, ours continues to thrive.

The Cheshire band can trace its roots back to the Stockport Borough Police Band of the 1950s. The amalgamation and County boundary changes in 1967 led to the formation of the Cheshire Constabulary Band.

The band’s primary role has always been to foster good public relations through music. Since its formation the band has played at thousands of engagements. The band is still as popular as ever and always in demand.

The Cheshire band is a traditional Brass Band unlike Greater Manchester Police and Merseyside Police bands which are of the military band configuration and include clarinets and other woodwind instruments.

Together with our wonderful corps of drums we are currently undertaking a series of extremely well received school concerts. In addition the band gives performances at awards evenings, ceremonial occasions and at numerous other public venues.

The Cheshire band also competes in National Brass Band competitions. These competitions pit the band against bands from all walks of life. In 2009, the Cheshire Police Band finished sixth out of 19 bands on September 26 at Harrogate.

In years gone by, the majority of Police Force bands were made up of serving Police Officers who attended engagements, and rehearsals in “duty time”. Cheshire was no exception.

Not any more. The current band and corps of drums consist of 34 committed musicians who are all volunteers. They originate from all walks of life in addition to the serving Police officers.

When at ceremonial occasions we are proud to wear tunic-style uniform associated with the more traditional image of the British Police Service.
