Children and young people's safety

We all have a responsibility to protect children and young people from harm.

Cheshire Police treat any reports they receive regarding the safety of a child/young person very seriously.

The Paedophile Unit was set up in the mid 1990s to deal with cases of child abuse in children's homes in Cheshire, dating back to the 1960s. Units like this strive to ensure that any investigations involving children and young people are always carried out sensitively, thoroughly and professionally. Focusing on arresting the offender and offering support, reassurance and help to the victim and their family.

The police will also we assisted by the Strategic Public Protection Unit (SPPU), who will offer further support and guidance during these horrific investigations.

SHARP - School Help and Reporting Page

Research suggests that most incidents at schools and in the local community are simply never reported and yet are common knowledge on the school yard.

The main ethos of SHARP is to give the youth of today a means of communication, by allowing young people to communicate with authority at a time and place of their choosing, and with anonymity.

It is also designed not to criminalise “kids for being kids” but to change their behaviour through a number of methods under the three main themes – Prevention, Education and Enforcement.

The core function of the system is a School confidential reporting system which supplements and works along side existing school reporting procedures and policies but uses modern communication tools as research discovered that most youths of today preferred to use all forms of modern communication tools to talk to family and friends on a daily basis – i.e. the internet and mobile phones, instead of ‘old fashioned face to face’ conversation. It is a 24/7 365 days a year, multi functional computer based system covering confidential school reporting of incidents in school and the local community.

It has the additional benefits of being an educational tool, information / intelligence gathering tool, communication tool and also a measuring tool. SHARP is now installed within many of our schools right across Cheshire, Halton and Warrington.

Cheshire Constabulary are also running a SHARP system www.cheshire.thesharpsystem.com which works along side the schools that have the system, but also offers the same service/provision to those young people and communities that are not able to access this through their own community school.
