Request

I want to know the details of all the incidents police vehicles have been in while in emergency mode. By emergency mode I mean while responding to a 999 call or in pursuit of a vehicle or while on any other emergency business etc.

My specific requests are.

  1. The number of accidents police vehicles have been in for the past 5 years. I would like a breakdown for each of the past 5 years.
  2. The speed at which the vehicle was travelling when the accident happened.
  3. A breakdown for each of the past five years as to what caused the accident.
  4. The total compensation pay out for the entire year for the past 5 years.
  5. The amount of damage caused to vehicles in pounds

Response

In accordance with section 1 (1) (b) of the Act our response is provided below;

Question 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6

Accidents involving police vehicles

Question 2

In order to ascertain the speed of the police vehicle at the time of the collision would require a manual search of each of the accident files/reports. This, it is estimated that this would exceed the appropriate limit.

The appropriate limit is defined in the Data Protection and Freedom of Information (Fees and Appropriate Limit) Regulations 2004, which is covered by statutory Instrument Number 3244 of 2004. Furthermore, section 12 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 allows a public authority to refuse to respond to a request for information where the cost of compliance would exceed the appropriate limit as defined by the above mentioned regulations.
