I am doing some research and wondered if you could help me:

  1. Is the attending medical person called an FME and what does this stand for?
  2. Under what circumstances would an FME be called?

Response

In accordance with section 1(1) (b) of the Act our response is provided below;

Question 1

FME stands for Forensic Medical Examiner the new name is FP which stands for Forensic Physician.

Question 2

With our current Medical Contract the FME or FP is used by the force in some of the following circumstance

  • Suspicious Death - required to attend site to examine deceased following potential suicide/murder.
  • Sexual Assaults - Intimate forensic samples from C/V and or suspects.
  • Drink /Drug drive blood samples at custody/hospital.
  • General Doctor (Custody) duties when not specifically employed on forensic related examinations to include initial mental health assessments, detainee examinations/ prescribing of medication while in custody, fit to detain reports etc.
