Request
1. For the 08/09 financial year please could you provide me with
the total number of crimes recorded in your area and (B) how many
of these were "screened out".
2. Please provide a detailed breakdown - preferably a table of some
sort - giving a breakdown of those crimes that were screened
out.
Response
In accordance with section 1 (1) (b) of the Act our response is
provided below;
1a. 78,289 Recorded Crimes in 2008/09.
1b. Due to a system change in 2007 there is no longer a flag to
identify "screened out crimes". Therefore to produce these
statistics would require a manual sift of all crime reports from
2008/09 to establish whether any of the approximate 50000
undetected crimes were "screened out". It is estimated that this
would exceed the appropriate limit. The appropriate limit is
defined in the Data Protection and Freedom of Information (Fees and
Appropriate Limit) Regulations 2004, which is covered by statutory
Instrument Number 3244 of 2004. Furthermore, Section 12 of the
Freedom of Information Act 2000 allows a public authority to refuse
to respond to a request for information where the cost of
compliance would exceed the appropriate limit as defined by the
above mentioned regulations.
