Can I have information regarding a Halifax bomber that
crashed at Oakmere on March 18th 1944?
Response
The Constabulary does not retain records for a period longer
than they are of operational use to us. Records relating to the
period in question may be held in the
County Archives. This was formerly Cheshire County Council, now
divided into Cheshire West and Chester and Cheshire East.
Cheshire Constabulary also has links with the Museum of Policing in
Cheshire. They hold records relating to past members of the
Constabulary and items of historical interest. You may care to
enquire from them if they hold information.
I would suggest however that the best source would be the RAF
itself. I understand you have been in touch with them to some
extent but I wonder if you have located the RAF Squadron that your
father served in at the time. Most squadrons tended to keep
individual squadron member and aircraft records that in some case
were quite detailed. You might consider that.
The only other thing that I can add is that many of the
authorities in Cheshire at the time of the incident may no longer
exist and will have become part of a larger authority, for example
the Coroners courts have been reduced to one serving the whole
County but at the time of the incident Wilmslow may well have had
its own Coroner. Perhaps you may care to try the current Coroners
Office (Cheshire
West and Chester Coroners Office or Chester East Coroners
Office) they may be of some assistance.
I am unsure however about the status of the Coroners Courts in
time of war which may have a bearing on the records kept.
