Compensation for Damage to Property

Request

Under the Freedom of Information Act, please could you provide me with details of cases where compensation has been paid to members of the public, businesses, other public services or other organisations for damage caused to their property by your officers or staff.

In each case, please provide information about what the damage was, how it occurred, and how much compensation was paid.

My request is for information from the last three years years (May 2007 - May 2010). If it is easier for you to provide the information for financial years, please feel free to do so.

Response

In accordance with section 1(1) (b) of the Act our response is provided below;

Financial Year 07 - 08 (April to March)

2 x carpets damaged by CSIs spilling fingerprint powder £8975 was paid to the owners to replace the damaged carpets.

Financial Year 08 - 09 (April to March)

1 x car damaged by parts of Police building falling on private car below We paid the repair cost of the car damaged by our building - paid £677.

Financial Year 09 - 10 (April to March)

1 x boardroom table damaged during search of office

1 x private car damaged by faulty car park barrier

We paid the cost of repair to the damaged car at £343 and the cost of the repair to the boardroom table at £368.

In addition, in financial year 09 – 10 (paid November 2009) we paid damages in as a result of our officers forcing entry into a home in relation to a violent crime in 2006. Two members of the same household and were paid £3910
