Request

Has Cheshire Police from 1995 to the present ever:

  1. Changed their computer systems where they have re-archived or moved databased, such as with an upgrade, etc.?
  2. Ever has a major computer failure where the data records where corrupted and needed re-imputing?
  3. Ever had a virus that affected data records?
  4. Or anything that would constitute needing intervention technically on the data records?

Response

In accordance with section 1(1) (a) of the Act our response is provided below;

When making a request for information you are entitled to be told whether the public authority, in this case the Cheshire Constabulary, holds the information requested and, if held, to be provided with it. The FOI Act defines information for these purposes as information recorded in any form. In respect of your request there is no recorded information held by the Constabulary in relation to your request. For advice and guidance please see the Information Commissioners web site at the following web address.  Information Commissioners - Detailed Specialist Guides

In order to assist you I have asked our Information Security Systems Manager if he could provide any information based on his own experience. He has provided the following.

Question 1

Yes, this occurs as business needs and technologies change.

Question 2

No, 'Major' systems are 'backed up'; thus it is a 'restoral' process where failure occurs - not re-inputting.

Question 3

No

Question 4

This is difficult to answer as many issues (technical and non-technical) can require intervention. Within the IT services world, this is regarded as almost 'business as usual' as business requirements, specifications and governance change frequently over relatively short time periods. Technical intervention does not alter data.
