Religious Hatred Crime

I would like to know the following statistics on crimes in your constabulary which are perceived by the victim to be motivated by religious hatred. I am specifically looking at the Muslim community and crimes targeted at Muslim individuals, organisations etc.

  1. The total number of hate crimes that have been reported over the last 12 months to you.
  2. The number of hate crimes that have been reported to you over the last 12 months that targeted Muslims specifically.
  3. The total number of physical attacks that have been reported over the last 12 months and, out of these, the number of physical attacks that were perceived by the victim to be motivated by religious hatred – i.e., because they are / were perceived to be Muslim. 
  4. The total number actual bodily harm offences that have been reported over the last 12 months and, out of these, the number of actual bodily harm offences that were perceived by the victim to be motivated by religious hatred – i.e., because they are / were perceived to be Muslim. 
  5. The total number of grievous bodily harm offences that have been reported over the last 12 months and, out of these, the number of grievous bodily harm offences which were perceived by the victim to be motivated by religious hatred – i.e., because they are / were perceived to be Muslim. 
  6. The number of verbal or written abuse offences that have been reported over the last 12 months that were perceived by the victim to be motivated by religious hatred – i.e., because they are / were perceived to be Muslim. 
  7. The number of property damage offences that were reported over the last 12months which were perceived by the victim to be motivated by religious hatred – i.e., because they are / were perceived to be Muslim. 
  8. The total number of Race related crimes that have been reported over the last 12 months and, out of these, the number that have been motivated by the victim’s Islamic identity rather than their ethnic identity.

Response

In accordance with section 1(1) (b) of the Act our response is provided below;

  1. 283 hate crimes (covering all types of hate crime i.e. racist, faith/belief (lack of), homophobic, disability etc.)
  2. We are unable to provide this information as a victim's religion is not always recorded.

  8. 337 racially and religiously motivated crimes recorded. As racially and religiously motivated crimes are classed under the same Home Office descriptions we cannot split them.
