Online shopping

Buying online can be quick, easy and convenient. But make sure the site you’re buying from has the best possible security so you don’t fall victim to plastic card fraud.

Use a secure web browser

Your browser should have a Secure Socket Layer (SSL) or Secure Electronic Transaction (SET). These security features scramble the purchase information you send over the internet to ensure the security of your transaction.

When making a transaction look out for the padlock symbol in the footer of the browser or on the address bar. You may also get a pop-up box informing you that you are entering a secure website.

Use reputable companies

Try and shop on reputable company websites. Read reviews and if you are still unsure go for a known high street shop’s website. Be sure to check the shipping charges as well as the refund policy.

Making a purchase through an intermediary

If you use an intermediary site such as Paypal when making purchases on eBay they will hold your money and act as a middle man until you receive your product. They will also offer advice and step-in should you not receive the items you purchased or if they do not meet the specification.

Shop around

Do not assume the price of something online is standard. Some sites are more expensive than others. Use price comparison websites to make sure you are getting value for money.

Auction Websites

Around 85% of all online shopping fraud occurs on websites such as eBay. When purchasing on these sites check the seller’s history, location and ratings. Read the description carefully and make sure the item matches the description. Check the postage costs because some sellers will charge more than others. Always report a fraudulent seller to the website.

Phishing

There are scam websites that are made to look like the official website of a bank or shop for example. They are designed to scam people’s personal details. Fraudsters also create emails that look like an authentic bank website asking you to confirm your personal details. Think to yourself, would a bank really contact you in this way? Always check the URL on websites to make sure that you have not been redirected to a fraud website.
