The Junior Road Safety Scheme has been running very
successfully in Cheshire West for approximately 30 years.
This year, Cheshire Constabulary has worked in partnership with
Cheshire West & Chester and has joined in the scheme to
incorporate the Junior Watch element.
The elements that have been incorporated into this year’s scheme
are as follows:
- Road Safety - the Green X Code, Cycling, In
the Car, Crossing the Road
- Community Safety - Keeping everyone's home,
car and possessions secure, how to protect their possessions
(property marking), information around bogus callers and general
security
- Personal Safety - keeping themselves, friends,
family and their community safe when out and about, keeping mobiles
secure, what to do in case of an emergency (ICE), keeping safe when
out and about (travelling by bus, train, car etc), staying safe
online
The scheme is running in all primary schools in
Cheshire West and two year 6 pupils have been nominated to be
'Junior Road Safety & Watch Officers' in each school. The role
of the officer is to present to their school the bulletins that are
made available on a monthly basis, run regular competitions, keep
up to date the notice board in school and ensure that information
is spread widely to peers, friends, family, carers and the wider
community. Each school is given a Guide which includes lots of
helpful hints and tips, information around the scheme and contact
details for Cheshire West and Chester and the Constabulary.
Prizes will be given out regularly throughout the year when
competitions are done by the pupils in the schools. Each Junior
Road Safety and Watch Officer should keep a scrapbook of
information, photographs, leaflets etc which will be assessed at
the end of the year and the one deemed to be the best will win the
new Award which has been established this year.
