Simon Dixon and Debbie Cookson volunteer for the Special Constabulary and have shared their thoughts with us, with the aim to give you more information about what it's like to be a Special, and how varied your volunteered hours could be.

My day job is as a divisional manager for an international lighting company. I was in my mid-forties and what my wife calls a workaholic. I was looking for something different to broaden my world; something which presented a challenge. I certainly found it.

Role: Special Constable for Nantwich Neighbourhood Policing Unit

The best aspect of being a Special Constable is the wide variety of tasks the work offers.

In twelve years of working as a volunteer police officer I have taken part in drugs raids, prevented public order incidents developing into serious violence, arrested burglars, searched for missing people and directed traffic at special events.
