Man arrested following fatal collision on M6 motorway

A 60-year-old man was arrested yesterday on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving following a collision on the M6 motorway in which two men died.

The man, from Selby in North Yorkshire, was the driver of a heavy goods vehicle involved in the collision, which happened at 11.16am yesterday (9 September) just north of junction 17 on the northbound carriageway. He received hospital treatment after the incident. He has been interviewed and granted police bail until 17 November.

One of the casualties was a 69-year-old man from St Helens. The second was a 39-year-old man from Ashton-in-Makerfield. Their next of kin have been informed  

The M6 motorway was closed in both directions and only reopened fully at around 9.45pm.
