Police in Chester are reminding residents not to give out
personal details over the phone after four people were tricked into
giving out their bank details in the last month.
In most of the cases, a man calling himself Mr Parry and
claiming to be representing various high street banks, tells the
customer that there is a problem with their debit card and they
need to go to the bank the next day to pick up a new one. In the
meantime he asks for their account details to cancel the current
card.
Within minutes of the account details being handed out,
purchases are made using the account.
PC Ian Jones said: “This caller is targeting predominantly
elderly people and tricking them into handing over card details. In
some cases, the residents have done exactly the right thing,
refused to give out any details and called their bank and the
police to report the matter.
“Unfortunately four people did fall victim to the scam and money
was taken from their accounts. I would appeal to anyone who
receives a call like this not to give out bank details over the
phone.
“If anyone does ask you for details, simply end the phone call
and look up a genuine number for your bank to check if the caller
was genuine. Real banks will not be offended by this.”
