Christmas and New Year

The festive period passed without major incident, in general crime and disorder were reduced in comparison to past years, which is very positive. The New Year is now with us and my team will continue to be proactive in tackling criminal activity and anti-social behaviour in the area.

Winsford cannabis farm uncovered by police

Officers from Winsford Neighbourhood Policing Team uncovered almost 500 cannabis plants growing at a house in Winsford.

The discovery at a semi detached house in Littler Lane was made following the execution of a drugs warrant just before 3pm on Tuesday 3rd January.

Officers forced entry to the property as there was a strong smell of cannabis emanating from the address. Once inside they discovered a significant cannabis farm with almost 500 plants being grown throughout the house. The plants were seized and the equipment used to grow them was dismantled by officers and removed for forensic examinations.

This is a significant find for us and forms part of our continued commitment to rid our streets of drug use and distribution. The premises were empty at the time of the search however my officers have a number of lines of enquiry underway to establish the ownership and occupancy of the house and to determine who is responsible for this drugs operation.

I would reiterate the need for members of the public to report any suspicious activity in their area or to report any building in which they suspect cannabis is being grown. I would ask Landlords to be vigilant and check who is renting their property and to look out for any signs that suggest the property is being used for cannabis production. This could include windows being obscured, lighting being on day and night, a strange smell coming from the property, door locks being changed and reluctance from tenants to allow Landlords into the property.

Drug use and supply which can have a major impact on our local communities will continue to be targeted. If anyone has information about drug related activity in the Winsford area please report it to us by calling either Cheshire Police on the new non–emergency number 101 or alternatively Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Police appeal following burglary on Winsford Industrial Estate

We are appealing for information after thieves broke into an industrial unit in Winsford over the Christmas period and stole containers containing small amounts of potentially dangerous materials.

Workers at Mitras UK on Road One in Winsford made the discovery late on the night of 2nd January. Thieves broke into the compound and stole large aluminium containers; they also attempted to steal a forklift truck causing damage to it in the process.

It is believed there is a small amount of a substance called Dicyclopentadiene in the containers, it is a substance used to make plastic components and is combustible if ignited. Our concern is that the thieves may try to trade or sell these containers for scrap value and would urge scrap dealers in the area to be vigilant if they are approached by anyone bringing in this type of item and to contact Police as they could potentially be dangerous.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident 758 of 2nd January.

Loan sharks

It has come to my attention that there are Loan Sharks operating in the Winsford area. Anyone who borrows money from unscrupulous lenders can quickly find themselves heading for financial ruin with spiralling debts.

I would encourage residents to pass any information they may have about Loan Sharks to the police.

Anything you can tell us may help, names, nick names, vehicle registrations, times and places where they may operate, how they operate, evidence of 'fear tactics' or other intimidation.

If a member of the community feels too frightened to talk to the police directly they can ring or email Crime Stoppers.

Crimestoppers will not take your name, cannot trace your phone call, or e mail address; residents can be confident that they can pass information without fear of anyone knowing who they are 0800 555 111.

Environmental Impact weeks

Greenfield Park, Glebe Green and Over Estates (GGO) Environmental Impact Weeks take place in the first three months of this year. The aim of the impact weeks is to co-ordinate a partnership approach to address priorities and projects that feature in the Community Action Plan.

The project will be looking at issues such as cleaning off graffiti, removal of fly tipping, re seeding grassed areas damaged by bonfires, the replacement of damaged litter bins and many other initiatives to improve the environment on the estates.

Inspector Dave Snasdell
