Working together to tackle metal thefts

Officers from Frodsham joined forces with other agencies to combat the growing problem of metal theft.

The operation, based near the A56 at Helsby, saw more than thirty vehicles stopped and examined by Police and representatives from VOSA (Vehicle Operator Services Agency), Cheshire West & Chester Council, HM Revenue & Customs, Scottish Power and Smartwater.

During the operation the following action was taken;

  • Power tools believed to be stolen were seized and will now be subject to further investigation
  • Numerous Vehicle Defect Rectification Scheme notices issued
  • 1 fine issued for no MOT and 1 vehicle seized as it did not have valid insurance
  • 2 drivers fined £500 each for use of red diesel
  • 4 drivers fined £300 each for waste carriage offences
  • 5 drivers issued notices to produce documents in relation to waste carriage offences
  • More than ten motorists prosecuted for vehicle offences that included bald tyres, defective brakes and fuel leaks.
  • 2 vehicles dealt with for exceeding weight limit

PC Adam Norton who co-ordinated the operation said

A key part of ongoing efforts to reduce this type of crime is to educate business and homeowners in ways to protect their buildings against metal theft. As lead and metal is generally accessible as it is on the exterior of a building, it is difficult to keep it secure.

But simple steps can be taken to protect your property, such as installing security lighting and/or CCTV, applying anti vandal paint, and planting bushes and hedges with thorns which make it more difficult for thieves to gain access to flat roofs.
