Motorists sent back to school

Schoolchildren in Knutsford have given the police a helping hand to educate drivers about the dangers of speeding.

Officers from Knutsford Police Station, Knutsford Fire  Station and students of Little Bollington Primary School held a driver  engagement day at the school.

Police officers pulled over anyone caught speeding, not wearing a seat belt or using a mobile phone while driving outside the school and directed them into the car park. The motorists were offered the chance to listen to a 15 minute presentation rather than be fined or have points on their licence.

The presentation began with year 5 and 6 pupils from the primary school interviewing the drivers. The children, aged 9-11 years, asked questions such as: Why were you speeding? How much time would you have saved by speeding past my school? and How would you feel if you hit me?

Firefighters from Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service then showed the motorists a video highlighting the consequences of speeding, using a mobile phone when driving or not wearing a seat belt.

In a two hour period, 28 drivers were caught speeding past the school. One motorist was caught travelling at 62mph on the 40mph road. As this was so far over the limit, the driver was not eligible to take part in the presentation and was issued with a £60 fine and 3 points on their licence.

PCSO Andy Dolan said:

Most of the drivers we stopped found the presentation useful and thought-provoking. The fact that the school pupils were involved as well as the fire service and police made the whole thing even more impactive. I think the pupils really gave the drivers something to think about. This day was about educating drivers and preventing them from speeding again in the future.

We will continue to hold events like this across Knutsford in areas where speeding is an issue.

We are also using information from the day to take to Cheshire East Council to see if the speed limit on the road could be reduced to 30mph.
