Drivers educated over town speeding

Motorists caught speeding in Knutsford are being shown the consequences of their actions during a hard-hitting campaign from local police and Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service.

A series of driver engagement days are being held across the town in areas where police have had complaints about speeding motorists.

During one driver engagement day, 60 motorists were pulled over by police and educated about speeding in Mereheath Lane.

Officers pulled over any drivers caught breaking the laws, directed them to a car park and offered them the chance to listen to a short presentation from Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service rather than receive a fine or points on their licence.

The presentation, given by an operational firefighter included videos of real life incidents and re-constructions of accidents caused by drivers speeding.

PCSO Greg Bithell said:

This latest event was generally well recieved. Many of the drivers we spoke to said they felt that they got something out of the experience.

These events are not about prosecuting people, they are about educating them. We have other events planned around Knutsford into the new year focussed on the areas where residents have told us speeding is an issue.

A Speed Indicator Device (SID)has also been used in some areas to remind motorists of the speed limit and show them exactly how fast they are going.

The devices do encourage people to slow down, they are a good reminder as some drivers genuinely do not realise they have gone over the limit.

Residents in the town have also complained to police about parking problems, particularly in the Bexton area at school drop-off and pick up times.

We have been working  with Cheshire East Council to have their traffic enforcment officers in the Bexton area at key times as they deal with parking offences now. We have also worked with the local schools to remind parents about parking responsibily when picking up and dropping off their children.
