Gambling addict jailed for gambling away clients’ money Date published: 5th July 2017 12.51pm

A business man who defrauded clients out of more than £100,000 to fund his gambling addition has been jailed.

Miles Cadwallader, 39, a Travel Advisor from Orpington, appeared at Chester Crown Court on 30 June where he was sentenced to 2 years imprisonment, after pleading guilty to 8 charges of fraud.

The offences were committed by Cadwallader making various false representations to a number of individual and business clients who booked travel services through him, with the intent of gaining direct access to, and subsequently utilising, their monies to fund his problematic gambling habit.

The victims, who included Cheshire based businesses, implicitly trusted the work being carried out by Cadwallader and had no idea that he was committing fraud to fund his compulsive gambling habit and plug the finance gap caused by his online gambling spend, which far exceeded the income legitimately generated by his travel business, ‘Miles from Home’. He gambled with and lost clients’ monies totaling in excess of £105,000.

With co-operation from various UK Banks, British Airways, Bet365 and the Insolvency Service the Fraud Unit from Cheshire Constabulary conducted a lengthy and complex investigation into the business activity of this self-employed travel advisor, unravelling the lies that he told to facilitate his crimes.

Detective Sergeant Brian Faint stated “This is an excellent result for the victims affected and sends a strong warning to any potential fraudsters that police will take robust action against offenders involved in this type of crime.

“This case also highlights the increasing trend of income generating crimes, such as fraud and theft, being committed by problem gamblers to fund their gambling addiction. As a result Cheshire Constabulary is now committed to developing a crime prevention strategy in collaboration with The Beacon Counselling Trust by offering access to rehabilitation services for problem gamblers.”
