M56 closed after HGV tanker overturns Date published: 20th October 2015 5.13pm

Cheshire Police is currently assisting Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service at the scene of a major incident on the M56 in Cheshire.

The incident involves a HGV tanker which has overturned on the eastbound carriageway between junctions 12 and 14.

As a result of the incident the M56 is currently closed in both directions between junctions 11 and 14.

The closures are expected to remain closed for several hours and motorists are advised to avoid the area.

We are currently awaiting confirmation of the substance the tanker was carrying.

The driver of the tanker is believed to have suffered minor injuries.

Advice to drivers and residents in the area

A 1,800m cordon has been set up as a precautionary measure around the incidents, and residents in the Helsby, Hapsford, Frodsham and Elton are advised to stay indoors with their windows and doors closed.

Motorist who are caught in the tailbacks are advised to turn off their air conditioning ventilation system and close their windows.

In addition to the M56 the Liverpool to Runcorn train line is also closed.
