M56 re-opens following major fire Date published: 11th August 2015 12.55am

The M56 has now fully re-opened in both directions following a major fire between junctions 12 and 15, near Helsby.

The fire was reported to officers at approximately 3.00pm on Monday 10th August and involved a HGV which was carrying propane gas.

As a result of the incident a 1600m cordon was put in place as a precautionary measure, leading to a full closure of the M56 and A5117, which resulted in traffic delays across West Cheshire and the Wirral.

Trains travelling between Manchester & Chester and Manchester & Hooton were also delayed, whilst flights travelling towards Liverpool Airport were diverted away from the scene of the incident.

The road was fully reopened in both directions at approximately 11.45pm once the vehicle involved in the incident had been removed from the scene.
