Man arrested following disturbance at local football match in Runcorn. Date published: 4th August 2017 11.56am

Officers have arrested a man suspected of brandishing a knife at a football match in Runcorn.

On Thursday 3 August, shortly before 7pm, police were called following reports of a man believed to have threatened one of the players with a machete knife at Woodside Fields, Brookvale.

The suspect fled from the area but was later traced and arrested on suspicion of affray. The 20-year-old local man is currently helping officers with their enquiries.

Inspector Fez Khan, of Runcorn LPU, said: “This was a very public incident which occurred at an adult local football match. Fortunately nobody was injured as a result.

“Understandably this may have caused some concern among those attending and within the local community but I want to assure residents that we have a man under arrest in connection with this incident, and we are working hard to get to the bottom of what occurred.”
