Update - Large fire at derelict Widnes Hotel Date published: 18th May 2016 8.30am

Officers from Cheshire Police are continuing to assist Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service at the scene of a large fire in Widnes.

The fire has now been extinguished, although the following road closures are expected to remain in place for several hours:

  • Albert Road – From its junction with Peel House Lane to its junction with Mill Brow
  • Halton View Road – From its junction with Page Lane to its junction with Albert Road

Local diversions are in place, although travel disruption is expected as a result of the road closures and motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible.

The majority of residents who were evacuated from their properties have now returned to their homes, although a small number of residents are unable to return at the current time; they are being supported by Halton Borough Council.

Although the fire has been extinguished, residents in the local area are advised to keep windows and doors closed at the current time as there is still smoke arising from the site.

At this stage the cause of the fire is unknown, although anyone who believes that they may have seen anything suspicious or has any information is urged to contact Cheshire police on 101, quoting incident 77 of 18 May 2016. Alternatively, you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
