A Widnes man has been jailed after robbing a woman at a cashpoint in Widnes.
On 28 August Ashley Graham, 35, from Somerville Road in Widnes was sentenced to five years nine months at Liverpool Crown Court after pleading guilty to robbery, possession of a bladed article and possession of a class A drug at an earlier hearing.
On the evening of Friday 27 July Graham covered his face with a scarf and grabbed a woman from behind, threatening her as she withdrew cash at an ATM outside a supermarket in Widnes Road. Members of the public came to her aid and Graham fled.
DI Ian Whiley said: “This was a terrifying ordeal for the victim. Not only did Graham physically grab her from behind, but he then threatened her with a knife demanding the money she has just drawn out of the machine.
“We want residents to be able to go about their business without being in fear and are committed to taking people like Graham off our streets. We are doing this by targeting those who carry knives in our community through our initiative ‘Operation Abolish’.
“I hope this latest conviction goes as a warning to anyone who carries weapons to commit crime that we are determined to find you and will you will end up behind bars.”
