A 34-year-old man from Widnes who walked up to his dad in the street and seriously assaulted him has been sentenced.

Daniel McAdams, of Moorside Court, saw his 80-year-old father on Widnes Road at around 3.30pm on Monday 1 February.

As his dad was about to go into a café, McAdams approached him and called him a name.

McAdams then punched his father in the face.

The victim fell to the floor, as did the glasses he had been wearing, and the assault left him with a serious facial injury.

He was given assistance by members of the public before being taken to hospital in an ambulance.

McAdams walked away following the assault and was arrested at his home within an hour.

He had grazing on his knuckles and blood on both hands when he was arrested.

McAdams admitted punching his dad and showed no remorse for his actions.

He was subsequently charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent.

McAdams pleaded guilty to the offence at Liverpool Crown Court on Wednesday 3 March.

He returned to the court to be sentenced on Wednesday 7 April.

McAdams was handed a 12-month prison sentence, which was suspended for 18 months.

He was also ordered to adhere to rehabilitation activity requirements and pay a £156 victim surcharge.

The court also imposed a three-year restraining order that prohibits McAdams from contacting the victim in any way.

Detective Constable Kayleigh Brown, who led the investigation into the assault, said: “The victim in this case had been shopping in Widnes town centre when he decided to go to a café to grab a drink.

“As he approached the café he saw his estranged son, Daniel McAdams, walking towards him.

“Without warning or provocation, McAdams then punched the victim in the face and left him lying on the floor with a serious facial injury.

“The injury has left the pensioner with a permanent scar.

“I would like to thank the members of the public who helped the victim after he had been assaulted and called the emergency services.

“Thanks to them, the victim was quickly given the medical attention he needed and we were able to arrest McAdams within an hour of the assault.

“I hope the fact that he has now been convicted of, and sentenced for, the assault gives the victim some closure and enables him to move forward with his life.”
