Cheshire Police and Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service warn of the dangers of swimming in Astbury Mere

Residents are being warned by Cheshire Police and Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service of the dangers of swimming in Astbury Mere.

With summer underway there are increasing numbers of people, especially young people, tempted to cool off in the mere.

While open water swimming is popular, it is advisable that this is done with organised groups who have the necessary knowledge and expertise to keep you safe.

Inspector Jim Adams from Congleton Local Policing Unit said:

“There have been reports of young people swimming in the mere, which has caused concern for their safety:

“We understand that with the warm weather many people could be tempted to take a dip in open water too cool off, but residents must be aware of the potential deadly consequences.

“Going into water can not only endanger your own life but the lives of others around you if they jump in to rescue you.

“We don’t want to discourage people from enjoying themselves near water, but there can be hidden currents and unseen dangers such as mud banks or items under the water that a swimmer can become caught on.

“It is our duty to inform and protect the public of the potential dangers of such activity across the county. The message to our communities is a clear one, don’t be tempted to put your life at risk by cooling off in open water.”

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service Group Manager Matt Barlow said:

“We don’t want anyone to enter any water, unless it’s with an organised open water swimming group. The inland water temperature in the UK, even during the summer months, is colder than you think. 

“If you do find yourself in the water  it’s important to know what to do in advance, so you can save yourself if you get into difficulty. Firstly try not to panic if you suffer shock from unexpectedly cold water. You will need to make a star shape with your body so you can float on the surface and hopefully you’ll get your breath back enough to swim to safety.

“Anyone seeking to raise the alarm and get help, the What3words app will pinpoint an exact location so emergency services can find someone in distress quickly.”
