Man arrested for religiously aggravated harassment in Chester

Officers have arrested a man on suspicion of religiously aggravated harassment following an incident in Chester city centre.
At around 6.40am on Monday 5 August, police were called to reports that a man was making racial slurs in the Eastgate Street area.
Following enquiries, a 26-year-old local man was quickly identified and arrested on suspicion of religiously aggravated harassment with intent to cause alarm and distress.
The man has since been released on bail until 30 August pending further enquiries.
Following the arrest, Chief Superintendent Jonathan Betts said:
“Hate crime and inciting violence in our communities is not acceptable and will not be tolerated in Cheshire.
“Those inciting such violence are doing so to cause hate and disorder in our communities, and I want to send a clear message that anyone who is found to be encouraging such offences, be that online or in person, will be dealt with robustly.”
