Only call 999 in an emergency
We aim to answer emergency calls as quickly as possible but levels of calls are making that really difficult. We are currently receiving record levels of calls and not all of them need an emergency response. This could mean that we don’t get to someone in danger in time.
Help us make sure those in most need receive urgent assistance by:
Amending your Android device settings to stop pocket dials. Go to “settings”, “safety and emergency” and then simply slide the SOS button to the off position.
Please note, these instructions may not work for those who did a software update from June 2023 onwards. Check with your phone manufacturer for your options.
If you do pocket dial 999 please answer any incoming calls to say you’re ok as it’s probably us ringing to make sure you’re safe.
Only use 999 in a real emergency:
- When there is a danger to life
- Someone is using or there is immediate threat of serious violence
- Serious injury has been caused to someone or their property
- Or in other cases like road traffic collisions where life is at risk, the road is blocked, or when a crime is being committed like a house burglary, or robbery.
And if it’s not an emergency, to consider using other ways to report:

- 101 non-emergency
