Operation Hummingbird is the investigation into a number of baby deaths and non-fatal collapses at the Neonatal Unit at the Countess of Chester Hospital.
Since May 2017, a dedicated team of detectives, civilian investigators and police colleagues have been working as part of this high-profile investigation.
In November 2020 Lucy Letby, now aged 32, of Arran Avenue, Hereford, was charged with a number of offences.
She has pleaded not guilty to 7 counts of murder and 10 counts of attempted murder between the period of June 2015 and July 2016 and is due to stand trial at Manchester Crown Court from 4 October 2022.
This is a very sensitive and highly complex case.
Due to the nature of it we have consulted with a number of medical specialists. We have also spoken to a large number of people to gather as much information as we can.
We recognise that this investigation has a significant impact on all of the families involved, staff, and patients at the hospital as well as members of the public.
Parents of all the babies are being supported throughout the process by specially trained officers.
This is an extremely difficult time for all the families and it is important to remember that, at the heart of this, there are a number of families seeking answers as to what happened to their children.
