What made you decide to join the Special Constabulary?
I’ve always had a special interest in the police since I was a child and being in the special constabulary gives me a chance to find out if it’s something I would want to do full time or not.
How do you find the balance between working as a special constable in line with your current employment?
I personally find the balance between my full-time job and volunteering quite a good balance as I do 2 shifts a week and still have time to myself. I personally see it as everyone’s situation is different and depending on how much you want to volunteer. You will find the time to do both and find that balance.
Do you feel supported by the Constabulary since joining as a special constable?
Yes, I feel very supported by the Constabulary. From the monthly phone calls from my supervision, when I’ve had a hard shift and they make sure I’m ok – even days after, to when they give recognition for doing a good job.
What tasks would you undertake during a shift as a special constable?
Tasks can vary from: routine traffic stops, dealing with people fighting, checking on vulnerable people when they call us, taking statements for a case or helping with the transportation of prisoners to custody.
What do you enjoy most about working within the Special Constabulary?
I enjoy meeting different people and dealing with different situations. Every shift is different to the next and can keep you busy all day.
What do you find most rewarding from your role as a special constable?
The satisfaction of when you help people and see the look of relief on their faces when you have helped them; from either reassuring them that they are safe or helping them solve their issues..
Would someone need prior experience in another field in order to be part of the Special Constabulary?
No. Every person is different, and everyone brings something different to the Constabulary which makes them unique.
What would you say to someone considering joining the Special Constabulary?
Go for it and if you get declined to begin with don’t let that deter you, keep trying until you succeed. I found it more relieving when I finished training knowing that I didn’t give up applying. It is such a rewarding and unique experience that will without a doubt boost your confidence.
