Man jailed for assaulting an officer in Warrington

A man who assaulted a police officer while on duty has been jailed.
Victor Jefferies, 64, of Orange Grove, Warrington was sentenced to 12 months in prison at Chester Magistrates’ Court on Monday 9 December after entering a guilty plea at an earlier hearing.
The court heard how at around 3pm on Saturday 7 December, police were called to a public house on Horsemarket Street following reports of an aggressive man attempting to assault staff.
Officers attended and found Jefferies had been throwing multiple punches and kicks towards staff.
Jefferies then went on to direct his aggression towards officers before brandishing a knife and pointing it towards them.
He was quickly disarmed, arrested, and placed in the back of the police vehicle.
Whilst on route to custody, Jefferies attempted to headbutt an officer.
Jefferies was charged with assaulting an emergency worker, public order, and threats with a bladed article.

Chief Inspector Neil Drum, of Warrington Local Policing Unit, said: “Jefferies’ actions were utterly unacceptable and caused immense distress, fear and alarm to local members of the community.
“Officers regularly put their own lives at risk in order to protect others and they don’t go to work in order to be assaulted.
“Jefferies could have caused significant harm to officers and members of the public, and I hope this result demonstrates we will not tolerate this type of behaviour in our town.”
