Parents urged to help keep young drivers safe on Cheshire roads

Parents across Cheshire are being encouraged to help keep young drivers safe on the roads - even after they have passed their driving tests.

Data released by the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) has revealed that more than 300 people have been killed or seriously injured in collisions involving young drivers across Cheshire over the past five years.

The call comes as the Force launches Operation Spotlight, a national campaign targeting young drivers, aimed at reducing the number of young people killed and seriously injured on the roads.

The operation runs from 14 September to 4 October.

In Cheshire, the message is particularly relevant given the county's extensive network of rural roads, where young drivers can face increased risks, especially at weekends and during the evening hours.

Inspector Brad Hughes, for Cheshire Constabulary’s Roads and Crime unit, said: "Every collision involving a young driver has the potential to devastate families and communities across Cheshire.

"While most young drivers are responsible and want to stay safe, inexperience can make it harder to recognise and respond to hazards, particularly on rural roads, at night and when driving with friends in the car.

"The support that parents and guardians provide doesn't need to end when a young person passes their test. Taking an interest in their driving, encouraging sensible choices and having open conversations about safe driving can all play a part in keeping them safe on the road.

"Through Operation Spotlight, we're working with partners to raise awareness of the challenges faced by new drivers and to help ensure that young people across Cheshire can enjoy the independence that driving brings while staying safe on our roads."
