Motorcyclists are among the most vulnerable road users. National statistics show that a disproportionate number of fatal and serious road traffic collisions involve motorcycles.  

In Cheshire, many incidents happen on a small number of well-known motorcycling routes into North Wales and the Peak District. The risk increases during spring and summer, when more riders are on the roads.  

Cheshire Police is committed to improving safety for all road users, with dedicated motorcycle officers working to reduce risk through enforcement, education and engagement. 

Common causes of collisions

• Rider error remains the most common factor, including poor observation, poor anticipation, poor bend positioning, risky overtakes and inconsistent braking technique. 

• Collisions often occur at junctions or involve turning vehicles 

• Riders aged 45-65 are more likely to be involved in fatal collisions throughout the spring and summer period 

• Many collisions involve bikes over 500cc, though smaller engine sizes are increasingly involved
